Today in Western Civ we went over more of the notes on Egypt for our test tomorrow. Mr. Schick apologized for yelling at us yesterday and here the notes we took included
- land of the Pharaohs
the nile and the "two lands"
-upper Egypt was a 500 mile long strip of fertile land along the nile
-lower Egypt was there wide land of the Nile delta emptying into the Mediterranean Sea
-the Nile was the major provider for Egyptians
- 3100 B.C. the two lands were united under Narmer (king or pharaoh)
- Government by a God- King
-Pharaoh was all powerful, worshipped as a God, and intimately connected to other Egyptian gods and goddesses
- Egyptians relied on a harmony and balance of the universe, which they called "maat" goddess was Maat
-Gods, Humans, and Everlasting life
- gods were often portrayed with animal heads or bodies
- Egyptians believed in an afterlife (ka)
- mummified bodies to preserve them for post-death journey
- The writing of the word of God
-earliest form of writing formed (3100 B.C.) - hieroglyphics by Jean Francois Champollion (Rosetta Stone)
- Egyptian script was written on papyrus- Egyptian scrolls
- Calendars and Sailboats
-Egyptian astronomers created a calendar with 12 months and 365 days to make better of seasonal cycles
- wooden sailboats were constructed to increase transportation ability on the Nile
