Today in Western Civ we took even more notes on Ancient Greece for our test tomorrow. here are some of the notes we took that need to be studied:
- Cleisthenes made broke and poor people feel special by listening to them and letting them have a voice in the government.
- citizens could participate- citizens are free male adult land owners born in Athens
- direct democracy was ruled based on citizenship
- in the agora, citizens argued, made speeches, then voted with stones
Gods and Goddesses
-They had mythological Gods that would interact with people as if they were real
-Poseidon and Odysseus didn't get along because Poseidon and everyone else was jealous of the life Odysseus had
- Zeus (God of thunder) got ticked off at people easily
-Athena (daughter of Zeus) - Goddess of wisdom, skill, and peace she was birthed out of Zeus' head fully formed and armed (city of Athens named after)
Fighting Spartans
-Greeks were war like people
- Spartans were known for their infantry: soldiers who fought on land
- Spartan boys trained from when they were 7
Athens Naval Power
- great infantry
-most effective weapon- TIREME which was the fastest ship in the world at the time it took up to 170 men on 3 levels to row it
- Phalanx- a big dense group of soldiers with shields and spears moving towards the enemy
Persian Empire vs. Greece
- the Persians came after them and the Greeks beat the Persians when they shouldn't have
