Pg 134-139 Democracy and Greece's Golden Age;
-Main idea; cultural interaction democratic principles and classical culture flourished during Greece's golden age.
-Why it matters now- Greece set lasting standards in art, politics, literature, and philosophy that are still influential today.
-terms and names-

-(477 to 431 B.C. ), Athens experienced growth in intellectual and artistic learning (often called the Golden age)
-during the Golden age of Athens, drama, sculpture, poetry, philosophy, architecture, and science all reached new heights- these legacies continue to inspire and instruct people around the world.
- Pericles' plan for Athens;
a wise and able statesmen named Pericles led Athens during much of its Golden age- 32 years
- Pericles'- skillful politician, an inspiring speaker, and respected general
- he dominated the life of Athens from 461 to 429 B.C. (Age of Pericles)
- Pericles' had three goals
1. to strengthen Athenian democracy
2. to hold and strengthen the empire
3. to glorify Athens
Stronger Democracy
Pericles increased the number of public officials who were paid salaries- most were officials were unpaid at the time

-citizens; male; adult; born of citizen parents
-laws voted on and proposed directly by all citizens
-leader chosen by lot
-executive branch composed of a council of 500 men
-Juries varied in size
- no attorneys; no appeals; one day trials
US democracy
-citizens born in united stares or completed citizenship process
- representatives elected to propose and vote on laws
- elected president
-executive branch made up of elected officials

-Athenian empire- after the defeat of the Persians Athens helped organize the Delian league Athens eventually took leadership of the league and dominated all the city-states in it.
-Pericles used money to strengthen a navy for Athens
-Sparta was at odds with Athens
Glorifying Athens
-Pericles persuaded Athenian assembly to vote huge sums of the leagues money to buy gold, ivory and marble
- Pericles goal was to have the greatest greek artists and architects to create beautiful sculptures and buildings to glorify Athens
- Greeks wrote tragedy and comedy
-theatriacal production In Athens were both and expression of civic pride and a tribute to Gods.

Tragedy- type of serious form of drama play performed that is based off of human suffering, human flaw- HUBRIS - excessive pride Tragedy; Sophocles Oedipus Rex- showed that you can not escape your own fate.
Comedy- is another type of play performed that was meant to be humorous, made of crude humor, made fun of people that are rich, powerful, and well respected- Aristophanes, Lysistrata
Peloponessian war- 431 B.C.- 404 B.C.war between Sparta and Athens that Sparta declared and won.
Philosopher- someone who tried to make sense of the world- lover of wisdom
Socrates- important philosopher in Ancient Greece who asked questions to find deeper understanding of the world.
Plato- another philosopher who studied under socrates and found the Platonist School of thought and the academy.
Aristotle- another philosopher who went to the academy and founded the Lyceum and the Peripaetric School of Philosophy.
