Today in Western Civ we were given a paper for review on Greece and the paper had questions on it that would help us review for the test on Friday on Greece. The paper had a lot of questions, but I got most of them from my notes.
Questions;
1.
a. Philip II became was King of Macedonia, he was a brilliant general and politician.
b. Macedonia is located just North of Greece with rough terrain and a cold climate, Macedonians lived in mountain villages rather than city-states. King Philip and Alexander the great from there.
c. Alexander the Great was Philips son, who immediately proclaimed himself as king of Macedonia when he was 20. for the next 13 years he had many accomplishments. his father got killed.
d. Darius III was the Persian king who tried to negotiate a peace settlement with Alexander, but it didn't happen and they ended up conquering the empire and Darius was found dead. Darius was killed by his own soldiers, after he defeated he tries to make peace and give him a third of Persia but Alexander declines and keeps battling and won it all.
3. Philip II was able to conquer Greece because of the troops he formed into phalanxes of 16 men across and 16 deep, they were all well-trained. He used these phalanxes to break through enemy lines, he also used fast moving calvary to crush opponents.
4. Alexander the Great had more interest in expanding his empire rather than governing it, he wanted to construct new cities, roads, and harbors and conquer Arabia.
5. Alexanders empire got taken control of by Macedonian generals that didn't know what they were doing and it basically collapsed and weakened this caused the culture to become new due to the mix of Greek and Eastern Cultures.

Alexandria- Egyptian city that was the center of commerce (money) right on Nile and Mediterranean
Euclid- a mathmetition who taught in Alexandrea
Archimedes-he was a hellenistic scientist he estimated the value of pi
Colossus of Rhodes- largest hellenistic statue created on the island of Rhodes. was then toppled by an earth quake in 225 b.c.
3. Trade contributed to the Hellenistic culture because Alexandria was an international community.
4. )Euclid created a a meuseame containing an observatory which other astronomers could study planets and stars
Lysistrata= Aristophenes = comedy
Oedipus Rex= Sophocles= tragedy
