Today In Western Civ we took notes for the Ancient Greece test on Friday, here are some of the notes;
- Did homer actually exist?
- polis- fundamental political unit, made up of a city and the surrounding countryside.
-politics (affairs of the cities), policy, political, etc.
- monarchy- rule by one single person (king)
- aristocracy- rule by a small group of noble, very rich, landowning families
- oligarchy- wealthy groups, dissatisfied with aristocratic rule, who seized power (military help)
- tyrant- powerful individual who seized control by appealing to common people for support
Aristocracy
-Aristocrats- members of the ruling class
-they attended symposium which were meetings where men would enjoy wine, poetry, performances by dancers and acrobats while discussing politics
- politics- exclusive club
-no women, middle class people, slaves, or even sometimes certain aristocrats who fell out of favor were excluded
Tyrants seize control
- aristocrats form alliances with Hoplites (soldiers)
- tyrant- someone who rules outside the framework of the polis
- modern meaning- an abusive ruler
- greek meaning- someone who seized power, rules, codes, laws
1st Draco- (harsh- draconian)
- all athenians are equal under the law
- death is the punishment for many crimes
- debt slavery is ok (work as slave to repay debts)
2nd Solans reforms
- outlaws debt slavery
- all athenian citizens can speak at assembly
3rd Cleisthenes
- created council of five hundred which is people chosen at random to counsel assembly
- citizens consisted of free adult male property owners born in Athens
- Isagoras was ruler but then people decided Cleisthenes was the better ruler and they trapped Isagoras for 2 days and on the 3rd day he fled, 508 BCE Cleisthenes was the ruler again.
